Meet Canadian contemporary artist Tanja Groos

I am a Canadian contemporary painter working in oil, acrylic, and mixed media, exploring presence, connection, and transformation through an embodied abstraction approach. My paintings move fluidly between figuration and abstraction, where human, organic, and imagined forms surface through gesture, layering, and intuition. Rather than depicting fixed narratives, the work reflects how we move through the world, influence our surroundings, and exist as part of a shared, living continuum.

I am a Canadian contemporary painter working in oil, acrylic, and mixed media, exploring presence, connection, and transformation through an embodied abstraction approach. My paintings move fluidly between figuration and abstraction, where human, organic, and imagined forms surface through gesture, layering, and intuition. Rather than depicting fixed narratives, the work reflects how we move through the world, influence our surroundings, and exist as part of a shared, living continuum.

Art as exploration. Humanity as nature. Colour as conversation.

Soft gradient washes meet bold, textured gestures, creating pieces that unfold in layers—inviting you to look closer, wonder deeper, and discover new details over time. My work lives in the tension between ritual and spontaneity. Preparing the canvas is meditative; the painting itself becomes an unforeseen journey guided by intuition, instinct, and curiosity. I experiment freely with mediums and methods, allowing each piece to evolve into its own voice.

A multidisciplinary creative core

As an artist, designer, and traveller, I’ve exhibited in group shows in Ontario and New York, and my paintings now live in private collections across Canada and the USA—including a piece acquired by world-renowned salsa dancer and choreographer Burju Perez. With over 15 years of corporate and digital design experience, my graphic design work has been featured in national showcases and publications. I received an Entrepreneurial Recognition Award from the Government of Canada for my contributions to business and creativity. My professional journey has also included leadership and support roles in several charities and not-for-profit organizations, deepening my understanding of connection, empathy, and shared human experience—threads woven into my artistic practice.

A life shaped by curiosity and exploration

Curiosity guides me into new experiences, perspectives, and ways of seeing. I seek out moments that shift my understanding, challenge my senses, and open new creative pathways. I’ve spent time in 20 countries, absorbing colour, movement, cultural nuance, and landscape as part of my artistic vocabulary. And, I’ve taken on experiencing various skills and tools. Each adventure leaves an imprint—sometimes subtle, sometimes vivid.
